Why is our olive oil called “Andromachos”?
It’s not just a name.
It’s a tribute — to a man who, though alone, became the silent guardian of an entire community. Andromachos was a quiet man who lived in our village, Vryses of Kyparissia. He had no family, no possessions — but he had something far rarer: a brave heart and a soul devoted to service.
Every winter, when the Kartelas River would swell and threaten to wash away the old wooden bridge, Andromachos stood there. Alone. Tied to a tree with a rope, he faced the raging waters to protect those crossing — people and animals alike. He never asked for anything. Just a little food, a bit of water, and a purpose to wake up for each morning. But one night, the waters came wilder than ever. And they took the bridge… and him with it. At dawn, the shepherds found him resting peacefully on the riverbank.
They buried him nearby, in the very place where he had stood each year to keep others safe. A new bridge was built — of stone this time — and a small cross was carved into it. A quiet tribute. And from that day on, his name remained etched into the landscape. And in our memories. They say that on some nights, his figure still appears by the riverbank. Watching the waters. Keeping vigil.Our olive oil bears his name because, like him, it comes from the land — with strength and silent devotion.
